Tech specs
Disks
- Any disk your Mac mounts: internal, external, network disks and disk images.
- Any folder, from the Disks screen or with Scan Folder…
- The startup disk with Full Disk Access gives the full picture; without it Attic still scans and shows what it couldn't read.
What is counted
- Space on disk, not file length: what the files really take, the same way Finder counts “used”.
- Hard links once, however many folders they appear in.
- A scan stays on its own disk and doesn't walk into other mounted volumes.
- Folders Attic can't read are marked and counted in the hidden space.
Hidden space
The folders add up to less than macOS says is used. Attic shows the difference as a ring of its own and breaks it down:
| Where it comes from | What to do |
|---|---|
| Purgeable space — caches and copies macOS can drop | Nothing: macOS frees it when it needs room. |
| In Trash — what you moved there | Empty the Trash when you're sure. |
| Other volumes — the parts of macOS outside your data | Nothing: macOS manages them. |
| Time Machine local snapshots | They keep deleted files until macOS removes the snapshots on its own. |
| Folders without access | Give Attic Full Disk Access and scan again. |
| Folders protected by macOS | No app can read them; they stay hidden. |
Safety
- Attic deletes only what you collect and confirm.
- Delete starts a five-second countdown with a Stop button.
- Items go to the Trash, never straight off the disk.
- Files macOS won't let Attic move stay in the collector with the reason; version 1 has no administrator helper.
Privacy
File names and sizes stay on your Mac. No analytics, no crash reports, no account. Details in the privacy policy.
